Podcasting can be a great way to increase exposure for your brand — provided you know how to successfully grow your audience. Hosting a podcast can be a lot of fun, but if you’re not sure how to start nurturing your listener base, check out my 6 tips below.
Describe your podcast in the detail it deserves, and remember to make it search-friendly
Always write like you speak. Allow your personality to shine through, as this is what your potential audience will see first. It’s also what will connect you with your listeners. Remember to include a few key elements such as what your podcast is about, how you help your listeners and where your podcast can be found. Furthermore, be sure to use words that people are likely to search for when they are looking for the content you’re sharing.
List your podcast in top directories
Now that you’ve got an awesome description, you’ll want to place your podcast where people can find you. Here are a few of my favorites and why:
iTunes has a massive audience base for you to potentially form a lasting relationship with.
Stitcher is a nifty app that streams shows straight to your device without the need for downloading or syncing. Get your description right and make it easy for would-be listeners to search for your audio.
TuneIn, which is used in more than 230 countries and territories, has more than 4 million podcasts and 100,000 live radio stations. In a nutshell, it’s the place to be.
If your content has a visual side, consider posting to Pinterest. Be original and find new followers on this platform. If you have time, make a short video clip about the top 3 things listeners will walk away with, and then post it on YouTube and other social channels. This will help broaden your reach to new potential listeners and provide you with exciting content to share across the web.
Transcribe your best episodes
Create show notes that you can link to at the bottom of your post. This will greatly help your SEO efforts. Aim for 300 words in your show notes and this will also assist with copy for other amazing pieces of content such as articles, social posts, infographics, memes and slideshares.
Get interviewed yourself
Let others know you’re available. This kind of cross-promotion can be an interesting, powerful and free way to grow your listener base. Demonstrate your expertise in your area. Don’t forget to be an awesome guest and share your episode as a blog, in tweets and in your newsletter. Ask for reviews
iTunes uses subscriptions and ratings & reviews as cornerstones in determining podcast ranking. Don’t be afraid to ask people to leave a review; if they’ve enjoyed your show, they’ll typically be happy to do so. Make this your call to action in your show notes and newsletters rather than asking directly on your podcast. If potential listeners see that others have enjoyed your show, they’re more likely to tune in too and further increase your audience count.
Don’t rely on the saying, “If you build it, they will come.” Be your biggest advocate, demonstrate your passion and spread the word about your podcast.
