Love at First Sight: How to Make Readers Smitten with Your Blog Post

What’s the first thing you notice when you’re looking for love? Is it nice eyes? Smooth hair? A huge Twitter following? There’s often something that immediately catches the eye, making us look twice. And when it comes to getting an audience to fall in love with your blog post, the same applies. You must have that eye-catching quality: an attractive title.

There are three takeaways for writing a great title:

1. Offer a list.

People love reading lists because they are easy to digest and don’t take very long to read. BuzzFeed is the master of lists (with a high success rate). Think about the great romantic comedy movie, 10 Things I Hate About You and the climactic scene when Julia Stiles reads her list aloud. The whole class is intrigued and her point was beautifully made. A blog that suggests a list in this title will have a similar effect.

2. Tease promised value.

If a blog adds no value to you, you will not waste your time reading it. The title is the best place to advertise that added value. Are you offering a well-designed visual, free download, or a first look into breaking news? Say it in your title. Look at the movie When Harry Met Sally. You know just from the title what you’re getting yourself into: A (delightful) movie detailing the events of a relationship.

3. Reveal just enough information.

The title is not the place to give away all of your information. It is not the place to beg users to read or share your content. Don’t be like John Cusack in Say Anything, standing outside a window with a boombox playing. Sure, in the movie this made a great impression, but for a blog title this can come off as desperate and showy. Be more like Jason Segal in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. He grabs the picture of Mila Kunis out of the men’s bathroom and gives it to her before he leaves. It was a simple gesture that aptly expressed his feelings. Your blog title should do the same: give just enough information to grab the reader’s attention.

So the next time you’re writing a blog title, take a look at your romantic comedy DVD selection for inspiration. With a great title, your readers will be swooning with love–and comments and shares.
