Love it or hate it, you can’t deny that TikTok IS the moment. When June rolled around and it was clear that COVID-19 wasn’t going anywhere, the short-form video app became a destination for creativity, joy, and silliness all summer.
Unlike most apps, where the content is primarily from people you follow, TikTok’s “For You” page serves videos from all kinds of people doing all kinds of things. This allows trends to spread like wildfire, becoming ubiquitous outside of specific social circles or geographic areas.
Because of the app’s versatile features, trends take many forms—video editing styles, the use of popular sounds, songs, or dialogues, themes or challenges, the use of specific filters, or a combination of them all! Here are some of our favorites.
Cool Video Transitions
On TikTok, anyone can be a great video editor with a little practice. This summer saw a rise in fun video transitions, from people changing their outfits by kicking a shoe to… whatever this sorcery is ⬇️.
Before and Afters
Everyone loves a good glow up, and people have found increasingly creative ways to document change over time. Six months ago, a wave of people recorded videos to a clip of Katy Perry’s “The One That Got Away” with the caption “they say to take a video 6 months apart.” This summer, people posted their “after” videos to showcase how much their style changed, and the results were amazing.
We can’t mention TikTok without mentioning viral dance videos! Two popular challenges were set to the songs “WAP” by Cardi B feat. Megan Thee Stallion and “Tap In” by Saweetie.

People on TikTok have the craziest stories. One popular way to share them is by reenacting the story to music with captions that explain what happened. This summer, two sounds of choice were a clip from Teen Beach Movie’s song “Can’t Stop Singing” and the jingle to a Russian cereal called Miel Pops… don’t question it.
it was like the second day and they bullied me for the rest of the summer #fyp
As a creative content agency, we especially appreciate this one! From professional photos to smartphone shots, photographers of TikTok spent the summer giving their best tips for how to get amazing pics.
Some trends just don’t fit into a category, and that’s what’s beautiful about TikTok. We could explain them, but we recommend you just experience them for yourself.
Wait for pops to join in😂 #foryou

If you didn’t smile while watching the videos in this post, we don’t believe you! Its future might be uncertain, but no matter its fate, TikTok has had a profound impact on social media—this summer and beyond.
